Amaran Ace 25C Review
The Tiny Light That Does Everything (Except Be a Key Light)
I did not buy the Amaran Ace 25C to be my main light. I bought it because I kept watching creator gear reviews and noticing the same gap: everyone wanted a keylight-quality look without the keylight price tag or the keylight footprint. I run a small content setup, and I needed something flexible enough to move between roles — not just sit in one spot doing one job.
One year and three months later, this little light has done more jobs in my home than I expected it to.
How I Actually Use It
As ambient lighting, almost every day. It sits behind my pothos plant in my living room, set to the “fire” effect at around 10% intensity. It’s become my favourite kind of background lighting — warm, flickering, genuinely relaxing, and it’s on more evenings than not, whether or not I’m filming anything.
As a fill light for content creation. When I’m shooting product photos with my Sony ZV-E10 for this blog, the Ace 25C works as a background/fill light. Paired with the magnetic diffuser cap, it softens nicely and doesn’t throw harsh shadows into the shot. It will be an excellent addition as a fill light for YouTube content if you need dynamic light placement or talking headshots. The magnetic mount is a beautiful addition to a light that fits in the palm of your hand and is literally similar in size to the Sony ZV- E10.
As an emergency bedroom light. This is the one I didn’t see coming. My bedroom’s overhead light went out due to an electrical fault, and I used the Ace 25C as a stand-in. Thanks to the magnetic mount, I snapped straight onto my TV’s magnetic wall frame and bounced the light off the wall to fill the room. At 90% brightness, it’s genuinely equivalent to an overhead LED fixture — bright enough that I had to dial it down rather than up.
What Works Well
- The magnetic mount is the standout feature. It attaches to almost anything metal in a normal home — a fridge, the back of a TV mount, a tripod plate — which makes it easy to reposition without extra rigging. If your content happens in different rooms or setups, this alone is worth the price.
- The size. It fits in the palm of your hand. For anyone shooting in more than one location, that portability matters more than people expect going in.
- Real RGB and bicolour range, with a long list of built-in effects beyond plain lighting — fire, paparazzi, police lights, party, fireworks, faulty bulb, lightning, TV flicker, pulse, strobe, explosion. I mostly stay on the fire setting, but the range is there if you want to get creative.
- Active cooling. There’s a small fan that kicks in if the light runs hot, which keeps it stable during longer sessions.
- Universal USB charging. No proprietary cable or wall brick to track down — it charges like most of your other gear, which means fewer cables!
- The magnetic diffuser cap. It clips onto the front of the light and genuinely softens the output, so even at higher brightness it’s not harsh if it’s pointed toward someone’s face.
- Comes with what you need. A carry pouch, USB cable, and a magnetic clamp attachment that lets you mount it to a tripod when you need more height.
- Bluetooth control. exists if you want to run it from your phone — I do not use it; I prefer adjusting the light itself, but it’s there if that’s your workflow.
- LED screen. Wonderful addition to an already feature-filled lighting system. I love that I can adjust the settings on the light itself versus using my phone. I mostly use my phone for essentials, and adjusting a light setting is not one of them.
What Did NOT Work (or Took Adjustment)
I would not call this a real con so much as a physics limitation: smaller light sources create harsher shadows and less diffusion than larger panels. This is not a key light, and I would not recommend buying it expecting one. What it does very well is fill light, ambient/accent lighting, or a stand-in light source for a small space — a lamp replacement, a background glow, a discreet light for a shelf or a TV console. Once I stopped expecting key-light performance from it, it’s been excellent at everything I actually use it for.
Would I Recommend It for Someone in the Caribbean?
Yes, fully. A few reasons this one travels well for us specifically:
- It’s compact enough to pack in a carry pouch — no oversized box to worry about with shipping costs or storage space.
- USB charging means no proprietary charger to hunt down or replace.
- Because it does the job of an ambient light, a fill light, and a backup room light, you’re not importing three separate devices — which matters when every extra shipment adds cost and hassle.
- If you’re building a small content setup and don’t want to gamble on a large, expensive key light sight-unseen, this is a much lower-risk way to start.
